Oh, What Fun it is to Celebrate in December!

Congrats to our Grades 3-5 Ambassadors who came to school Ready to Learn by being Inquirers!

Inquirers develop their natural curiosity. They acquire the skills necessary to conduct inquiry and research and show independence in learning. They actively enjoy learning and this love of learning will be sustained throughout their lives.

Our K-2, 4-6, and choir had their winter concert this week. What an amazing job they all did! Thank you to all our families for coming out to support our students.
Our MYP Chamber Orchestra performed on Fox 8 News and brought joy to all the viewers who tuned in! They also made us very proud!

This week we experienced our coldest temperatures of the school year, so far. Due to the temperature being so cold, we had to move recess indoors. We were creative in finding ways to fit everyone, while having some choices with indoor fun. We are unable to use the gym, due to PE classes that occur during lunch time, but we are able to use the dance studio, bleachers (quiet reading), stage (drawing/board games), and the brown tables for group activities.

During MYP Morning Meeting, we celebrated students who are giving...
Cahle, Nazir, and Davieon have been taking action to clean the school and spoke to students about  the importance of everyone taking responsibility for the cleanliness of our building.

Eric and Charlie Pohl shared their action of giving to others. They donated proceeds from their handmade Cheric Dolls, Lake Erie Lucy and Swamp Sally to the Ohio Environmental Council. The dolls sold out and they were able to give $400.00.

                                        Classroom  Morning Meetings

This week, I went around to see Morning Meetings in PYP classrooms. There is so much learning that takes place during the first 30 minutes of school. During many Class Morning Meetings, students are:
  • Practicing leadership skills by taking on the role of Ambassador and leading the meeting
  • Sharing personal stories
  • Discussing current events...local/global
  • Reviewing and learning new skills (all subjects)
  • Building their mental math ability through Number Talks
  • Building on their ability to self organize by planning their day and setting goals
  • Building classroom culture through review of the Essential Agreements, giving "Shout-outs" to each other, and starting the day with balance
Note: In MYP, students do many of these types of activities at the start of each class period. Students in MYP need to arrive to their classes on time and check the white board in each class to see their agenda, review/complete their "Minds On" warm-up activities, and plan for learning.

Did you know students who are 15 minutes late to school every day between Kindergarten and 8th grade, will lose one full year of school by 9th grade?
Looking at these morning boards shows why.
Picture
This is an example of a Kindergarten morning board where students look/discuss their agenda for the day.

Building on social skills and how to be kind, each first grader gives the Ambassador of the day a compliment. The Ambassador then reads their list of compliments aloud (oral reading/presentation skills). This happens daily!

In grade 2, students go over their morning board, discuss their agenda, and begin their day.

They also had an opportunity to document any remaining questions.

Mr. Levy's 5th Grade Flex created a song with lyrics about the CAVS.

After writing the song, they  transferred the melody to the xylophones/metallophones and the students created a bass line on the bass xylophones that would compliment their melody.  The students chose to perform the song just as an instrumental piece but here are the lyrics to get an idea of how it may have sounded if they had sung it.
