Building School Culture

8/26/2017

This week, we had our first all school Monday Meeting. It was a tight squeeze and from it came much reflection. We decided that with our new space, it would make more sense to have grade level school meetings that allow for personalized time to build school culture. This new format will also help new families who attend Coffee Mondays on the 2nd and 4th Monday, to get to know other families with students of the same age group, in a smaller setting. With 200 new students, we have many new families who would like to connect with others and learn more about ways to support our IB curriculum. We will continue to have one all school meeting on the 4th Monday of the month. *On All School Mondays, the morning routine will change due to the need to move cafe tables to make room.

The new format for Monday School Meetings:
1st Monday of month; MYP (grades 6-8)
2nd Monday; K-2 (Coffee Monday for parents 8:00-8:30 followed by meeting)
3rd Monday; 3-5
4th Monday; All School (Coffee Monday for parents
8:00-8:30 followed by meeting)

The new format begins Tuesday, September 5th with MYP (due to Labor Day on Monday)

7:40am...PYP students (Primary Years Programme; grades K-5)  were excited to enter!  Thank you to our parents for being patient while we work through the new arrival and dismissal procedures. By day 5, we were much better!

Reminder: Please do not drop students off on 22nd or Payne. Bus riders and Day Care vans use Payne for parking. Car Riders must take Chester to 21st and come through the drop off line in our parking lot behind the school. 22nd Street is for exiting the parking lot and CSU students who will need access their parking lot beginning August 28th. Also, do not park on 22nd in front of the school. This is very dangerous for students and you block traffic from our lot which stops the entire process. Thank you for your support!

Ms. Beers and ALL STAFF members spent the week modeling Campus Cafe routines and expectations. Students love being seated and listening to different genres of music each day while dining. By Friday, one student asked, "Can we hear that French music again?" What a great way to making lunch time a learning experience where everyone wants to be!

To get to know each other better before starting school, a few kindergarten parents met up at Public Square. Their phase in days were awesome and it showed on their first full day. They remembered many procedures and most importantly, they  Stayed with the Group!

Learning in the Project Areas, Teaching Kitchen, Music, and with SOLE
In preparation for the solar eclipse, fifth through eighth grade students watched as Mrs. Hochman, our PYP IB Coordinator, dissected a cow's eye.  The students learned about the different parts of the eye and viewed the amazing colors found in the retina.  They were able to make the connection between staring at the sun too long and damage to the retina.  The pretty colors could turn black with too much exposure.  Science rules!

Miss Thomas' MYP/ELA classes made Kindness notes to put on tables in the Cafe after their current events discussion on Charlottesville. Grades 1-5 loved finding the notes when they walked in. One student said, "Someone left their paper on the table and it says something nice." We explained that the notes were left for them from middle school. It's so nice to be back together in one building!

Miss Thomas' class also left these for Ms. Beers. What a great way to end our first week!
