Hurricane Katrina
We didn't have much schema on Hurricane Katrina, but some of us had prior knowledge of hurricanes. We read books about hurricanes to gain new information of what these storms are like (form). Then we began reading a historical fiction book, I Survived Hurricane Katrina, to see what it might have been like for an 8 year old living in the Lower Nine Ward of New Orleans on that frightful day (perspective). We also examined stories printed in the Plain Dealer Newspaper, to see how recovery has been going in New Orleans (change).

*form, perspective and change are 3 of our 8 key concepts that we use to guide our thinking and understanding in the PYP Programme

Basketball Jones is not only a lot of fun, but he is inspiring. His message, "You are somebody, you are important, you matter!" What a great way to start the year!! This year, we're coming up with 6 word phrases to tell who we are. These 6 words will guide us into our new year and hopefully keep us motivated. My 6 words are:

"Shaping hearts and minds, building relationships"

Let's help our students think of their 6 word phrase.

With each unit of inquiry, the hope is that students will learn and be inspired to take action and make the world a better place. Before we can do this, we need to know...what is action and how can we make a difference?

I can't believe we just finished our first week of school! Each day was filled with getting to know each other activities, exploring our new classroom, learning new routines and procedures and of course...FUN, FUN, FUN!!!! Thank you for having your child to school on time every day. No one missed out on any fun or beginning of the year procedures.

Next week, we will move into "getting to know how we think and learn" activities. This baseline data will help me create learning groups that meet each student where he/she is. Don't forget, we have a long morning this year, so please pack a healthy snack for our brain breaks.
