In math, we are learning the steps to solving word problems. Reading our word problems twice, helps us to make sense of the problem. Drawing a picture and writing an equation helps us set up for structure so that we can solve accurately. We know that we have to do all of these steps in order to get a 4 out of 4 in our math journal.

In writing, we began our unit on Narrative Writing. We love sharing our personal stories. We were very excited when we received our Tiny Topics notepads! We are living our lives as writers!! Carrying these around, helps us to reflect and think about all the small moments we have in a day.

Tiny Topics Notepads
We carry these around with us to record topics that we can turn into "Small Moments" for narrative writing.

After we choose a Tiny Topic to turn into a Small Moment for our narrative writing, we think about ways to can bring our stories to life! We want to pull the reader in, and make them feel as if they were right there in the moment with us.

In reading, we began using our schema to connect with our new learning and ask more questions. We found that sometimes as we are reading, our new questions are answered. But sometimes, they are not. These are our lingering questions. What can we do about them?
We decided that these questions can be answered through discussions with others, reading more books about that topic, conduction a SOLE (https://www.solecle.com/#/welcome), with a group of friends, or through independent research. We have so many ways to find answers to our questions.

One student said, "I wish people could stop hurting others . Can't they come to our school and see how to be caring?"

Elena worked very hard on her chalk drawing and it brought a lot of peace to observers.

What is Respect?

Last week, in our unit of inquiry on Who We Are, we focused on respecting others, conflict, and the difference between rules and laws. While reading our latest I Survived Book...I Survived 9/11...we discussed how to be peacemakers, respect differences and ways to resolve conflict. Throughout the week I informally observed how students used their social skills and self-management skills. These skills are part of our PYP curriculum and are monitored and assessed throughout each unit of inquiry along with research skills and communication skills.

Taking a listening walk

We had class outside a lot this week. We enjoyed our quiet morning walks, while taking in the sights and sounds of downtown. We adopted a spot on campus that we will observe and record the changes we see through the seasons. Ask your child about their spot...Where is it located? What living things can be found there? Why did they choose it?

It's fun to end the day with popsicles! We were bucketfillers and shared  with the bus drivers. They deserve to have fun too!
SELF ORGANIZED LEARNING ENVIRONMENTS
S.O.L.E.

After conducting whole group SOLE activities, we were able to finally do one on our own. I was amazed to see how well they did. Way to go First Grade Teachers. They shared so much of what they had already learned in grade one. CIS rocks!! Check out these kiddos in week 3 of grade 2, researching, Why do we celebrate Labor Day? We found out that Labor Day is not just a day off from school:)  We also discovered that in some countries workers rights are not protected and in some places children must work instead of going to school. One student asked, "Why did we need to march and create laws for the number of hours and days of the week people work? Why didn't people just care about each other and do what is right?"
Oh, the innocence of children! I love what I do! Happy Labor Day everyone!
